Princess Emma – a troubled soul

Posted on Posted in Our Dogs

Emma is a very special lady who has captured the hearts and minds of the DDR crew .. this isn’t anything new, since all of our dogs have the same affect on us. But Emma is a special case – one of those dogs who has been so desperately let down in her former life .. who has been so cruelly abused .. the signs are so obvious to see for those of us who are seasoned volunteers ..

Emma has been with us since 28th April after being found as a stray by the warden just outside Dundalk. She has been at kennels ever since .. and it was clear in the first week that her social skills were non-existent – she gave the impression that this was her first time to be out in the real world – as if she’d been kept locked up in her former life .. her stance and demeanour around other dogs also lends to the belief she was kept restrained and dogs set upon her – this is completely heartbreaking and soul destroying as we know only too well how hard it is to break this conditioning ..

With all this knowledge and awareness under consideration, and our limited resources, we have been doing our very best to work with Emma and help her start to trust people and dogs .. this is a very slow and careful process .. Emma has a couple of volunteer’s who have been working closely with her .. they are now aware of her triggers and how to distract her .. it’s not every dog that stresses her  – she has run regularly with one of our volunteers’ and their own dog and Emma hasn’t passed any remark ..

Emma has many faults, none of which are her own doing .. However, she has many positives .. she is absolutely gorgeous .. loves to run – would make a fabulous companion to an active person .. today she enjoyed a roll in the grass – so much so, it took a lot of coaxing to get her back on her feet and run back to kennels !!!

Emma deserves to know what love is .. what a safe home is .. what it means to belong .. there is a home out there for her – they just haven’t seen Emma yet .. so for now, we will continue to do our very best to work with Emma and distract her as best we can from the past that continues to haunt her every day .. we will do everything in our power not to let Emma become another victim of the low-life’s in our society who get a kick out of abusing animals for their own sense of entertainment ..
